Florida Nursing Schools and Resources

Search Accredited Schools of Nursing in FL – Student Nurse Degree Programs for LPNs and RNs

Once upon a time the educational track to a nursing degree was narrow and certainly not one pursued by just anyone. The nursing career is still not pursued by just anyone, but the means by which you earn a nursing degree are now much more streamlined and accessible. In Florida, as in nearly every other state, hospitals continue to come up short on nurses. The contributing factors are numerous, but are helping drive a growing nursing shortage.

Within the state you may choose from a few dozen campus-based accredited schools of nursing. Many of these have also added on equally good online or blended degree programs, again ensuring that all types of prospective students have the opportunity to earn a nursing degree.

Major metro areas in Florida are home to multiple large hospitals. These diverse healthcare facilities employ hundreds of RNs and LPNs and many continue to need even higher volumes of nurses. Some still are associated with university medical and nursing programs. Major medical centers include Shands, Tampa General, and Florida Hospital. Large hospitals feature all medical specialties, and in so doing also employ a wide cross section of nurses.

But smaller communities also require nurses in busy medical centers of their own, nursing homes, education, public health, and in corporate healthcare.

Financial Incentives in FL for Student Nurses

With a constant shortage of nurses you’ll often find various types of state-based incentive programs that can help you pay for your nursing education:

  • Florida’s Nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program was designed to offset perpetual state nursing shortages in all facilities. However, eligible candidates must in the short term be willing to work in a medically underserved facility in exchange for loan forgiveness. Program welcomes RNs, LPNs, and Registered Nurse Practitioners. Possible $16,000 in loan repayment per program candidate.
  • Florida Nurses Association maintains an association funded foundation out of which a few dozen small scholarships and grants are meted out to members for education, research, and even emergency financial aid.
